About me:

Born in 1978, I am a Brighton based artist best known for her distinctive paintings on fabric. I started making artwork on flags and textiles around 2007 as a response to war, notably 'Afghan Girl' later appeared on the front cover of Le Monde Newspaper.

Alongside my art practice, I have completed a PGCE in post compulsory education in Art & Design and been an Artist in Residence at Brighton MET, I am an experienced tutor, art lecturer and facilitator. I have had many art students and graduates work for me in the studio and enjoy assisting their professional development.

Flags, quilts and brocade are used to explore and question how identity is constructed by the places we inhabit. The use of textiles; washing, dyeing and sewing cloth and images of women are used to highlight the minority of women documented in art history.

By dyeing the fabric a dark shade and painting freehand with bleach, the portrait slowly develops during the painting process. The fabric is bleached many times to create contrast and the material is washed each time to remove the chemicals. The result is a timeless image, which appears to emerge from the cloth. Recently I have incorporated mixed media; paint, inks and pigment onto found fabric adhered to wood panels.

I have shown internationally in 8 major solo shows and over 100 group exhibitions, alongside such artists as Damien Hirst, Tracy Emin and Peter Blake. I have exhibited at Dallas Contemporary and Honolulu Museum of Art and has been shown at major art fairs in London, New York, Miami and Korea. My work has appeared in print publications including Le Monde (France), Neo2 (Spain), The Telegraph (UK) and The Independent (UK).

I have produced commissions for Armani, Ralph Lauren, MTV and Microsoft and she has enjoyed collaborations with photographers Terry O'Neill and Bill Wyman from The Rolling Stones. My work is housed at Saatchi & Saatchi London, Red Bull and Mitsubishi Bank and can be found in private collections worldwide.

NOCTURNES Exhibition | 8 December 2017 - 15 February 2018

Preview | 12 December 2017 | 6:30 pm  –  8:30 pm

The Exhibitionist Hotel | 8-10 Queensberry Place, SW7 2EA

‚ÄčThis exhibition will reveal the new work by British artist Pam Glew. Focusing on alchemy and the maker, the exhibition is mystically titled 'Nocturnes'. Each piece, delicately crafted within a Japanese Kimono, demonstrates Glew's new, complex production techniques that challenge our notions of consumerism verses environmental governance.

Famous for her unique bleaching technique on vintage flags and fabric, antique American quilts, brocade and old jeans that are dyed black and painted freehand with bleach, this show will explore works created in the artist studio over the past 5 years.

Pam Glew's portraits slowly develop in the layering bleaching process resulting in a ghostly image emerging from the fabric. This will be the first time the artist will be showing her Kimono works to the public.

Glew has shown internationally in 100 group exhibitions and 6 major solo shows and is found in art collections worldwide.
