About me:

I am a visual artist based in Birmingham. During my AA2A at Coventry University I am working with the printmaking department, specialising in print making.

My current research is focussed on the collection and distribution of the photographic image. I am interested in methods of resistance against various surveillance sources which collect and distribute our images. This usually takes the form of repeat patterns that inform and disrupt these methods of image collecting.

My point of focus for this project is based around the new “media eye” screens which are currently being installed at Birmingham New Street station. They are multiple screens which are used to advertise products to travellers. The installation boasts the progression of ‘personalised advertising’ into the public realm. This is achieved by facial recognition cameras being installed invisibly in the screens. This software collects data which predicts the passer by’s age and gender. The data collected will then alter the type of advertisements being show on the ‘media eyes’ to be more specific to the demographic viewing the ads. I am interested in the using the time to explore the use of surveillance in retail environments, questioning how this contradicts its role in crime prevention and security.

I will also be using the residency to look into methods of resistance to avoid surveillance or negative behaviour which occur from being watched.
