Artist engaging with less conscious modes of perception: touch, hearing, memory, sense of time, movement, atmosphere: when mind, body and world interact.

Anima Mundi

Project Research.

The prime objective for the AA2A placement at Liverpool Hope has been to develop my practice in new ways. I continued working with themes relating to time, and undertook various material trials: e.g. using the inkjet printer and laser cutter.  Then in November 2015 a synchronistic encounter with an unusually bountiful oak tree, led me to decide to collect and plant around 300 acorns. I anticipated that directions would emerge from the simple, mindful activity of planting and nurturing the acorns over the winter months. I aimed to be as open as possible to this process and to how a meditative focus might trigger intuitive responses. I undertook further research as topics arose.

I saw from the outset, that by purposefully engaging  with the phenomenon of growth, there was an opportunity to stimulate intrigue and a sense of wonderment around the emanation of life and being alive, and to heighten sensory awareness of the mysterious workings of the Earth, for others as well as for myself. I also saw connections to psychology and notions of personal or spiritual growth.

As time went on, I became absorbed with tensions between the known and the unknowable and by wanting to make works that teetered on the brink of familiarity and strangeness: between explicit knowledge and what is often described as the arcane or esoteric. I learnt that the etymology of arcane dates from the 1540's and the Latin for secret, hidden, private, concealed; from arcere to close up, enclose, contain; from arca a chest, box, place for safe-keeping. This brought insight into why the box form and its paradoxical implications of containment and release, had become a significant material and metaphysical influence within my making.
