Project summary:

In the last couple of years I’ve pivoted to work more as an artist alongside my illustration work which I’ve done for twenty five years. I had my first solo exhibition this summer. The exhibition included some printmaking but I’d love to make this a larger component of my work. Coming to Sunderland will give me the opportunity to produce work I couldn’t produce from home and to work on a larger scale. I am exploring themes around interiors and rooms. In the printmaking department I’d like through etching and possibly lithography to continue the theme I’ve been exploring of “rooms I’ve never lived in” and rooms I have fleeting memories of. I have also been exploring ideas around the same theme as a designer-maker and the access to the FabLab would help me prototype ideas. I intend to make a set of tall modular houses or rows of houses or shop fronts that interlock with screen printed details.

The opportunity will enable me to access equipment and will also place me in a highly creative environment which I’m sure will be inspiring and motivating. I hope that my long experience as a freelance illustrator plus my more recent explorations as an artist will be useful to the students at Sunderland and I hope that this will inspire them to both pursue a creative career and also maintain a personal practice.
