My maternal experience is central to my art practice. My work is partly autobiographical, whilst at the same time reflecting on common experience. I incorporate collaborative and participatory elements into my art; gathering and sourcing data from life, others and the world around me, and often integrating my own presence into my work.
For the past three years I have been developing an on going project called ‘tell me about your mother…’, in which I collect stories about mothers and maternal relationships, usually through an interactive art installation. To date, selections of these stories have been represented in my work using impermanent materials such as paper and fabric.
During this residency I will create a specific work with these comments forming the primary focus, acting as a more permanent record of the project. My idea is to experiment with more durable materials such as stone or wood, creating a series of sculptures incorporating text from a selection of these stories.
The opportunity to work in a different environment within a specific timescale via AA2A offers a focus and constraint to develop my work as a self-contained project, and access to different media and equipment. Working with students, tutors and other staff will provide valuable insights, constructive and critical feedback, and networking opportunities.
