Suki Chan is a moving image and installation artist. Her mixed-media practice explores our physical and psychological experience of space. Threaded through her work is an elegiac tracking of the footprints of human narrative, the fables and relics embedded in time and place. By abstracting familiar objects and materials, she creates uncanny narratives that are akin to a form of reverie or visual poetry. Chan’s haunting film Interval II resonates with ideas about migration and transition and how space becomes place. “The aesthetics are intended to seduce. I want to transport the viewer to an elsewhere, one step removed from real life….I’m interested in a time after the humans have gone.”

Suki Chan recently completed a two-screen installation piece called Sleep Walk Sleep Talk, an evocative, impressionistic study of London at night and the transitory freedoms people find in an urban metropolis. It is the first project of FREE TO AIR, a major new four-year programme by Film & Video Umbrella for London Councils. Chan plans to continue her explorations of psychogeography, urbanisation and architecture with projects sited in the UK and beyond. She recently curated FOR THE SAKE OF THE IMAGE an exhibition for Jerwood Visual Arts in London that explores the reciprocal relationship between moving image and sound. Chan has participated in solo and group shows, artists’ residencies and research projects in the UK as well as internationally in Spain, Singapore, China and the U.S.
