In my work I like to explore historical narratives and I would like to visually interpret the fascinating stories of the intrepid Victorian women explorers who ignored the strict rules of society and set off, often alone into the unknown to explore other continents. This project would be the catalyst for me to rediscover the joy of experimenting more with my printmaking, trying out relief prints on a much larger scale, including drawn images, pattern, text and maps, combining and layering with screen print, mono print and digital machine embroidery.
Having moved to Cumbria recently, there has been the opportunity for creative career reflection and I feel it is the right time for me to take some time to challenge myself on a new body of work and to boost my professional development.
The AA2A programme would enable me to take time to challenge myself artistically and importantly to access different types of professional print equipment, in particular a large relief print press, but also give me the chance to work within the textile department linking my two specialisms. I would welcome the personal development I would gain from interaction with other AA2A participants, students and staff involved with the programme.
Working towards exhibiting my new work in a series of relevant venues, would enable me to share with a wider audience the amazing achievements of the Victorian women I so admire, and to celebrate the creative journey of my own work.
I also hope that this AA2A project may give me the opportunity to work on other historical art residencies in the future linked to a collection or museum.
