Ceramic sculpture 100 x 200 x 100cm

Nature of things is a human-sized, modular sculpture constructed from hand-built ceramic circles. Exhibited a number of times, its form is site-responsive depending on the location of installation. The structure, an interdependent mesh, is built from materials that make it suitable for indoor or outdoor display. Known for its earthly qualities, clay is a familiar everyday material, used extensively by human-kind, known both for its utility and fragility.   Raw stoneware clay on the outside and glazed on the inside, the circle represents notions of unity, wholeness and infinity or indeed the Earth itself. The eyeball is spherical; our field of vision is circular, perhaps we are predisposed to circles, drawn to their continuity and grace. It is anticipated that the dis-ordered construction and breakdown in connectedness engages the viewer to visually try and resolve the ‘order of things’. Motivated by an interest in how our perception of the world affects our ecological awareness and ecological thinking, the Nature of things seeks to draw connections between humans and objects, including nature itself.
