AA2A Artist

Samantha Cordery

Year:
2018 - 19
Project summary:

The relationship between painting and photography is the central subject of my painting practice. Through the physical transformation that takes place between photography and paint a temporal transformation also occurs; these split second moments can be considered in the measured nature of the painting. The painting becomes a contemplation or reflection of the swift decisions and conventions of the photographic image. Along with chance or mistake images, stills extracted from moving imagery have also become sources for my paintings further incorporating film into my practice. Within this work, photography and film’s visual characteristics and phenomena, the blur and glitches for example are instead consciously recreated in paint, openly acknowledging the relationship between these mediums.

On the AA2A scheme I want to further explore the relationship between all three mediums whilst continuing to explore the use of the unconsidered as my source. I would hope to use the opportunity to produce a considered and informed body of work by consolidating what I have learnt thus far, reflecting on the way my work has evolved and to then further this through the use of not just the physical facilities available but the supportive and like-minded environment the university would offer.
