I am a London-based artist who works with photography and the moving image; I exhibit internationally, and my work has been included in exhibitions and film festivals in America, Australia and Europe.
I work in a conceptual, research-based and site related way to reveal the multiple histories of cinematic spaces both real and imagined. Often these places are now only accessible through historical research using a range of archives, both formal and personal. In developing the work, I explore how these sites become complex constructions of story and actuality. Using photography, film and installation this has led me to produce a number of projects based around the idea of the ‘spectral space of cinema’. Example’s of these type of projects include 'Islington’s Lost Cinemas' and 'The Australian Cinemas', and 'Film'.
During my residency at University of Bedfordshire I intend to research and creatively explore the history of a number of historic cinemas that have previously existed in the area. I am keen for this project to continue building on my practice that address the spectral space of cinema, however here, I will focus on developing a project that is in response to a single historic cinema site. The work will be a study and an artist response to both the history of the building, and, just as importantly, its contemporary context.
Having first started my career as a commercial architectural photographer, I entered university for the first time later in life as a mature student when I wanted to develop an artistic practice. I graduated with a First Class B.A (Hons.) degree in Photographic Arts from the University of Westminster.
