I am a visual artist whose practice concerns investigating ways people create connections with place. My works include painting, drawing, mixed-media collage, applied craft and artist books. I use the process of collecting and gathering information and materials relating to a specific place, which I then manipulate using labour intensive and time-consuming processes to create works that are multi-layered in both material and concept.
My main aim from the AA2A program is to learn a range of basic print making techniques, which I hope to incorporate into my current practice. I have always been interested in the variety of visual expressions that are achieved through printmaking. Being able to use these elements to work on is an exciting prospective.
Since returning to Winchester in 2013 after living in Singapore for 7 years, I have been working on a project which concerns re-acquainting myself with Winchester. It is part of a larger project investigating how people create perceptions of place. Whilst on the AA2A program, I aim to produce a series of artist books that will reflect my experience of living in Winchester.
In addition to working with the new visual language of printmaking, I am interested in experimenting with the idea of 'multiples'. By working into the multiple images created by printmaking and making them 'unique', I hope to metaphorically reference the ways people create their own marks in a place to make the relationship personal and meaningful.
AA2A program will help to expand and develop my artistic practice, making it more rich and multifaceted. Furthermore, I look forward to being back in an art educational environment where dialogue with lecturers and students will inspire and encourage me to look for new and positive ways to further my investigation.
