I am a ceramic artist who fuses elaborate surface decorations with forms in clay. Surface, form, colour, texture and decorative patternwork - all come together in my visual and tactile ceramic sculptures.
From pre-history patterns have adorned man-made objects and they are visual expressions of ideas through which we can discerndifferences and similarities between peoples. A basic interest in humanity and how people express themself is the foundation of my work.
My decorative themes are taken from research into international and historical uses of patterns and ceramic styles. By blending different often divergent influences into one piece of ceramics I aim to raise questions about cultural identity and hierarchy within an increasingly globalised world in which mixed cultural identities seems to contend with a rise in essentialism. I ask myself: Does one pattern/tradition dominate the other? Does each hold their cultural visual identity? When patterns are mixed what new cultural references are made?
Patterns as a means to express ideas links directly through pictograms to written languages and in extension has led me to look at international visual systems of communications. My work includes international road and warning signs, gender signs, braille, Morse code and international shipping flags. Recently I have extended my explorations into the digital world of communications of binary, QR and barcodes and emojis. I am very excited about the possibilities of linking these with my other pattern references.
During my time on the AA2A scheme I will continue to explore the possibilities of mixing various visual system of communications. I want to research and develop a way to add print as an added surface decorating technique hoping it will add another dimension to the surfaces of my ceramics. I will scale up my sculptural forms to make a pair of large statement pieces for gallery exhibition.
