I am currently developing a limited edition body of glasswork, which is an exploration into making, materiality and a proclivity to collect and rework everyday objects.
This new work entitled: because I’d quite like to experience just being in the world is in complement to my more intangible, social engagement, issue-based work, and a kind of investigation into hand eye coordination and the unfettered nature of craft. Working at the college will give me time and space to develop a series of moulds of a number of domestic and everyday objects – utensils, tools, combs and other miscellaneous items, and experiment with reproducing these objects in pate de verre and cast glass.
because I’d quite like to experience just being in the world is about revisiting the maker aspects of my artistic practice and dedicating some uninterrupted time to realising this idea – where the value of the object and the time it takes to produce it are central to the concept of the work. I have been spurred on to expand this project idea and to make because I’d quite like to experience just being in the world because of an exhibiting opportunity in a Brighton gallery in 2017. In recent years, the outcomes of my projects – artist’s books, print and installation – have been in contrast to a more formal making and exhibiting trajectory. The exhibition invitation has given me the impetus to develop because I’d quite like to experience just being in the world and to look again at what it means to be a maker, and how/if one strand of my practice can live comfortably with the other strand.
