Project summary:

My work combines ceramics, design and illustration to explore the process of drawing and to create a distinctive visual language. I work as an independent designer and maker, producing functional ceramics for stores and online. My process starts with slab-building to work through different ideas and I then use those pieces as the starting point for my main collection, which is slip-cast at a specialist factory in Stoke-on-Trent. I also produce one-off earthenware vessels and bowls by hand which are hand-painted with my illustrations.

The AA2A scheme is an opportunity to change my usual routine and try new processes in ceramics and print- making. I’d like to focus more on sketching and initial research by using the library facilities as a starting point to collect references such as sculpture and figurative painting.

My project entails making a new series of ceramic works which showcase the processes that I use. By working with slip-casting, I can create a mould then change the outcome of each vessel with the glazes or an illustrated design. I would also like to use the initial sketches I draw to work towards making some larger scale silkscreen prints or etchings.

I look forward to working in the studio and being part of the university creative community. I would greatly value feedback on projects from students and tutors. I’m hoping to learn as much as I can about different processes and to use this experience to develop my professional practice further.
