Previous AA2A Artist

Lauren Lawton

Year:
2021-22
Location:
Stoke-on-Trent
Project summary:

Established in textile print and dye processes my collections have included hand dying, collage and machine stitch embellishment. The through line in my work is to create a harmonious balance between contrasting shapes, texture and colour.

Inspiration comes from observations made in my own environment and places I’ve visited. Using photography as a way to document my findings I like to zoom in and capture the unseen and unnoticed aspects of a place. This constant processing of visual information can become overwhelming so I like to categorise my findings and collate into themes to inspire my work.  From there I work intuitively to pick apart outlines, silhouettes and shapes.

Colour plays a big part in my process. I revel in the technique of colour mixing and often spend hours formulating complicated dye recipes. Hand dying and screen printing add another layer to the process and allow me to control the tonal depth and placement of the colour.  Often challenging the rules of fabric dying gives me the opportunity to create effects that others would usually try to avoid or consider a fault, for instance allowing the dye to bleed and spread across the fabric creates an ethereal, atmospheric texture.

The AA2A would enable me to further push the boundaries of fabric dying and printing processes, documenting and collating a detailed sample file for reference. I want to then transfer my findings to create a cohesive body of work.
