Previous AA2A Artist

Laura Slater

Year:
2021-22
Location:
Bradford
Project summary:

Laura Slater has been developing her studio practice as a textile designer and image-maker since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2007. Most commonly utilising traditional production methods of screen-print, as design and image making tools, process and drawing are central to the development of her distinctive printed objects.

Laura applies her images onto everyday objects with a desire to reinforce the significance of print and design as a vehicle for democratic engagement with creative practice.

‘Museum of the Self’ is a new body of work that expands upon my exploration of the relationship between our engagement with objects and environments as an expression of our selves. With a practice that utilises applied Illustration, spanning both commercial product and design for a gallery context, this interplay seeks to examine the nuances between functioning as a studio vs. factory and it’s potential impact on audience’s access to art as part of the everyday.

The work produced during the AA2A residency will allow the investigation of new narrative focused image making and theme  (‘Museum of the Self’) whilst exploring material qualities that relate to both domestic and democratic products (rugs and books) whilst developing scale and meaning appropriate for gallery contexts.

The aim of the residency is to working with Rug Tufting to explore Illustration and drawing through textile media and Riso Printing as a developmental process in which to explore drawing through printmaking and illustrated book layout.
