Project summary:

My work aims to capture the essence of beauty, fragility and preciousness of details found in the botanical landscape, usually overlooked unless one stops to pause allowing time for closer observation. My inspiration comes from the natural world; in particular in my own locality. I am drawn to the intricate, delicate structural details of botanical specimens found bordering the urban environment, growing from the cracks in the pavement by the roadside, and from the rural green landscape in beautiful wild meadows, woodlands, hedgerows and gardens and the weather beaten coastline of Great Britain.

I collage and juxtapose diverse materials to create balance and harmony in the wearable jewellery pieces and decorative objects I make. My work is imbued with a sense of calm and serenity to make a comment about the importance of connectedness to nature and it’s therapeutic benefits for wellbeing and to emphasise the responsibility we all have to respect and preserve biodiversity, as human impact continues to damage and threaten what remains.

I am fascinated by different materials inherent characteristics, more recently I have introduced porcelain and repurposed tin within my practice which has brought a new dimension to my work in terms of finish, form and weight. The porcelain is very tactile, and is imprinted and embossed to capture memories of the impermanent natural materials I collect, through process making them permanent, contained and embedded, rather like a fossil or the descriptive silhouette of a cameo.

The vintage tin I repurpose tells a story of a past life aged over time adding to the narrative of my jewellery pieces, evoking memories and a felt recognition. The tin allows me to introduce accents of colour and patterns chosen for their reminiscence to the natural topography, to evoke a sense of place, a time or a memory, and a feeling of peacefulness and tranquility for the viewer or wearer, as an antidote to the fast pace of our busy lifestyle.
