Jill Holland

Year:
2010-11
Project summary:

I’ve been deeply dispirited by the lack of space, and in the winter, heat in my tiny studio.  I have to make new, larger pieces and be able to work all year round.

After experimentation with a wide variety of mediums, the ideas are crystallizing and the focus of my practice has narrowed.  My starting points revolve around the nature of the materials I use and my interest in cave paintings, museum collections and the rocky landscapes of South West France and Cornwall.  Two things that particularly fascinate me are the idea of glaciers slowly tearing their way through rocky terrain and also erosions formed by moving water.  Some of the porcelain glazes I’ve experimented with have a certain quality of ice, others the qualities of water.  The clay surfaces I’ve been developing share some qualities of rocks marked by the elements and by man; I would like to bring these essences together in larger sculptural forms and vessels.

Being able to use gas kilns, a slab roller and printmaking facilities at PCAD would enable me to develop my ideas on a larger scale; and also to explore the possibilities of screen printed and digital imagery. My present kiln is electric and I would seize the opportunity of using a reduction kiln to develop glazes and surfaces.  Additionally, it would give me an indication as to whether a gas kiln would be a wise investment for the future.

The chance of working in the ceramics department at PCAD would be an inspiration; enabling and challenging me to develop my ideas into new forms.  The opportunity would enable and challenge me to develop my practice and produce a body of new work for the Members Showcase at the Devon Guild in 2011.
