Project summary:

I am a contemporary embroidery artist who is interested in creating my own sculptural and detailed embellishments using unconventional and waste materials. My work has a strong focus on colour, shape and layered pattern using a mix of both textile and mixed media materials. I am excited to look into developing my ideas for further embellishment concepts. In particular I have ideas for creating embellishments/sequins involving more  transformation processes such as sublimation, dye and screen printing - as well as thinking of ways to increase the scale of my work and the complexity with the structured and 3D elements.  Hand embroidery is often seen as a very passive, slow craft with a lot of traditional background. I enjoy showing how tradional stitch can be manipulated into something playful, modern and full of curiosity.

This opportunity to be a part of the AA2A scheme would give me access to higher tech facilities that I don’t currently have available, such as digital fabric printing, sublimation printing and print room/dye facilities. Being able to continue my development around creative embellishments and pushing these ideas further with combining craft and technology is really exciting. Having dedicated access hours would also give me permission within my artistic practice to spend that time creating work for my own journey. A lot of my time is taken up with exhibiting, teaching and lecturing and I really want to get back into active making and pushing my own boundaries on my textile and embroidery creations.

I would like this opportunity to inspire me to create a new vein of working samples that would progress into a new collection of 3D sculpted embroidery pieces. My personal outcomes would include new ideas for sequin creation and incorporating print based processes such as sublimation, digital print or dyes/foils.
