Previous AA2A Artist

Jeremiah Krage

Year:
2010-11
Project summary:

Originally trained in the performing arts, I have been consistently drawn to audience interaction, the use of physical objects in performance, and objects as dramatic entities in their own right.  These interests guide my work and inform my practice.

During the AA2A access period, I will be further developing these ideas by exploring the creation of ‘celebratory vessels’ – interactive, practical objects to be imbued by the user with emotional significance.  The concept derives from a desire to overcome a sense of physical isolation from those who are absent.  How can I feel physically close to someone travelling abroad, or living in another country?  Is it possible to create a means of conjuring their ‘presence’ with, or capturing their essence in, a concrete object?

The project will also explore a range of materials, challenging the concept of ‘vessel’ in the process.  How might a textile garment ‘contain’ the essence of another, and still be wearable?  Would a significant object rendered in glass retain it’s emotional resonance?  How might the associations of funerary ceramics be challenged?

Through a combination of contextual and practical research, and reflective practice, I aim to interrogate, stretch, and ultimately enhance my existing creative practice.  The opportunity to explore new media, access a wide range of resources, and to benefit from the experience of students will be invaluable to my ongoing creative development.
