I work predominantly with HD video, writing and performance. I regularly use actors to interpret my scripts, which is a collaborative and intimate process. My current practice revolves around personal history, environment, and social standing. I use my direct environment to propel me into discussing, through writing and video, questions of the everyday. The mundane and ritualistic are fascinating to me, and by magnifying those moments I attempt to explore the space between. A thread will often appear from a fleeting moment, curious enough for me to attempt to pull further. Something catches the eye; an advert for an Au Pair under a rail bridge; a conversation overheard; an outmoded lecture on ‘success’ for sale in a charity shop; a string of emotionally intense emails.
My process is grounded in deconstruction; picking apart human behaviour, language, movements, and more recently the architectural and aesthetic structures we are surrounded with. I use personal history – memories, dreams built from past events – to shroud the cold, hard statistics taken from the Media. Questions of truth and fiction hover over both these materials. Contemporary and outdated self-help, sociology and psychology further inform the work. Domestic settings – settings which I have a personal connection with – are used as a springboard for bringing together all elements of an idea. Melancholy and dark humour are important tools to the work, creating a sense of uneasiness and contradiction. The interaction of actors with written scripts causes an important transition, into language and movement, and their interaction with the space I have given them. Live performance has been slowly becoming an important and appropriate medium for the work, temporal and fragmented.
