Project summary:

Through social practice and puppet making I will queer linear depictions of English history.

I am researching Christopher Marlowe's 16th Century play Edward II and E.M Forster’s novel Maurice both which feature fully realised complex gay protagonists within historic settings. These men, their stories are beacons from the past - they are pins on a queer map reaching back through time.

I wish to invite students from Anglia Ruskin to help make hand and rod puppets which will lead to the creation an abridged version of the story of Edward II which will later be filmed. I wish to use puppet making and DIY theatre to make queer stories visible.

The result of my research (of which AA2A forms part of) will be the production of a film which will combine documentary footage with staged scenes co-divised with a group of young local LGBTQ+ people.
