Project summary:

I am an artist who approaches society and science in a questioning way. The starting point of much of my work is contemporary society’s relationship with world changing events such as climate change, new technologies and pandemics. The quirkiness and energy of 1960’s design excites me and I strive to harness this dynamism whilst commenting on our own altered world.

Shedding Salty Tears will consist of three different sections, each with their own particular emphasis.   Each section will comprise a large central sculpture setting the theme of that particular board and will be surrounded by 30 white and blue shells, sea life, drinks cans, milk bottles and tins suggesting the detritus at the bottom of the sea.

Broadcast News If you put a shall to your ear you can hear the sound of the sea, but this shell is wired for sound and broadcasts news of the sea to the world. The work asks us to listen to our ocean with urgency.  Broadcast News consists of a large hand-made shell attached by  phone wire to a ceramic dial.

Salty Tears A very long necked bust of a women will be the centre piece of this section about the anxiety of the West. I will create a pool of glass tears at the base.  The work will be hand-built using molds, slab building and coiling.

Gently Weeps  An African Mangbetu harp is the inspiration for this section symbolising the Eastern hemisphere.   The harp looks like a boat at the mercy of the seas and an apt symbol for this section. I will make it from clay slabs and add reclaimed wires.

The AA2A opportunity would allow me to use a range of facilities: slip casting; a large ceramics kiln, a glass kiln, glaze making facilities and a slab roller to achieve my project aims.
