Project summary:

I am a painter, printer and researcher. I have been trying to introduce greater ‘materiality’ in my printing practice. I have started to experiment with combinations of embossing and printing on soft metals. My starting point in the placement, will be the concept of ‘Tama’ (Greek for votive offering).

‘Tamata’ [plural] are typical Orthodox devotional objects, that could be defined as a material dialogue with the divine. I want to expand the form and meaning of these traditional forms, building on what currently is being made and creating forms which emulate, develop, subvert, and challenge, redefining them as objects that encourage contemplation, within a plural, largely secular context.

I believe that theory and praxis are context driven. A new working environment will influence the maker and create another dynamic, facilitate discourse and ask that ideas are communicated to others during the journey (of making) which will influence outcomes. The AA2A placement will enable me to add to a body of work on the exploration of spirituality. I am also applying because I think my intentions will otherwise be hard to achieve in another context, both due to the cost of hiring the equipment and access to mould making facilities. My wish is to create work which will reinforce the role of art as a means of contemplating and transcending the human condition. Religious traditions have created powerful narratives through successive layers of history and political will and there is a tension between the past and the present. At the intersection of religion, politics, and art there is a third space where we can attempt to find new ways to communicate and respond to life’s challenges.
