Project summary:

A chance encounter with glass ...

I was born in Cyprus in 1969. I trained in Britain in the Fine Arts and Interior Design and hold a Master’s Degree in Ceramics and Glass from the Royal College of Art. Uniquely placed between the worlds of conceptual art and design my works represent a fusion of hand crafted art combined with the contemporary medium of architectural glass.

Pioneer of a technique I developed at the RCA, I break, colour and texture sheets of industrial glass and then re-laminate them to make architectural scale artworks that look fragile but are extremely durable. My expansive professional career consists of an enormous variety of artworks and projects commissioned during the last fifteen years.  All projects are bespoke giving flexibility to design varying in scale and context. My portfolio includes exclusive residential projects, churches, commercial, corporate buildings, and more recently larger scale public art works.

A prolific artist as well as designer the experimental approach to my process-led work is largely explored in exhibitions and gallery installations. In these works I continuously challenge myself as an artist expanding the possibilities of my medium. In the last decade my work developed into three-dimensional sculptural elements incorporating the sensual experience of light and space.  More recently I produced works inspired by my cultural heritage infused with a contemporary twist.  A leading innovator of my unique technique, my highly experimental approach remains at the cutting edge of innovation in contemporary glass art techniques.  I am author of the book titled 'Lamination' (2004), published by A&C Black. I have exhibited extensively around the world and worked with architects and designers on projects of varied scale for places such as Michelin star restaurants, Motor Vessels, and the British Airways lounges at London Heathrow Airport.

‘Unlike most artists working in glass, George Papadopoulos treats his medium

with a healthy disrespect ...These works express the in-built paradoxes of glass:

that it is commonplace and extraordinary, visible andinvisible, dangerous and strong’

Charles Darwent, art critic of The Independent on Sunday
