Project summary:

My ceramic pieces include both thrown and altered vessels that are improvised through intuitive actions and inspired by a methodology of immediacy that I initially developed during my undergraduate and postgraduate work at UCLan from 2000 to 2008. I employ an economy of transient gestures and the propinquity of plastic clay to capture its essence and use ephemeral firing techniques, the effects of which highlight the certainty of chance. I am interested in developing new methods of glazing and constructing work from ‘failed’ pieces that have broken in the kiln, and making ceramics more sustainable and cost-effective through the re-use of materials. The facilities in my home studio are limited to a wheel and electric kiln, which prevents me from doing gas reduction firing. The opportunity provided by AA2A is giving me valuable access to gas kilns in UCLan’s ceramics studio and thereby making it possible to explore this artistic innovation, produce a body of reduction-fired sculptural work, and gain more exposure through selected exhibitions.
