The AA2A project provided me with suitable workshop facilities to enable me to make plaster and silicone moulds and use the moulds to experiment with a variety of casting materials from plaster, paperclay, bone china clay and stoneware slip. I found this period of experimentation to have been invaluable and has led to finished works for two exhibitions and a large quantity of completed moulds for work in progress for one other exhibition.
My work during this period has focused on casting books such as The Bible, prayer books, and a variety of miscellaneous books based on their particular size rather than content.
The cast Bible and prayer books were exhibited in The Holy Trinity Church, Leeds in April 2007 as part of the Artfusion North 'Presence' event. It consisted of 150 small plaster bibles and prayer books which were placed on the pews to represent a 'ghostly' presence of past congregations. The visitors to the exhibition were invited to interact with these symbolic forms and express their innermost thoughts through the process of drawing, painting, etching or writing onto the blank pages. The collection of plaster books were then used to form a 'cairn' construction within the Church as a landmark/ monument that documented their presence.
The 'Once upon a time' series of printed paperclay books were made for the exhibition 'Sense' that was to be held in a gallery within a library. These works include prints of my drawings that are based on family history.
