For 2019 - 20:
Since graduating in 2015 I have constantly worked to develop my creative portfolio, with the aim of establishing a profitable and sustainable business. My current workshop is at Makers Yard in Leicester. Current new sculptural lighting and illuminated metal designs are allowing me access to the interiors market. Opportunities for commissions and sales for private, public and corporate installations, introduces my contemporary metalwork to a broader customer base, which is a crucial issue when establishing a new business.
Having the dedicated time and workshop space and equipment through the AA2A scheme, would enable me to focus on issues such as; Modifying and creating bespoke tooling solutions for issues encountered when designing a piece, giving me more freedom and options during the making process; Designing bespoke, wooden presentation boxes, display plinths and accessories, which enhance the quality materials and craftsmanship of my collection and gives added luxury appeal and exclusivity of the design; Engineering bespoke fixtures and fitting for lighting and illuminations; Waterjet cutting templates for lighting will cut down on time to create a piece; Bringing glass elements into the design will open new avenues of product and aesthetic. All of the above would help me to commercialise this area of my business. With the main goal, of becoming a profitable business model, allowing me to be full-time self-employed Silversmith, Metalsmith and Jeweller.
Interacting with students through workshop practice and presentations would benefit my own confidence and experience as well as hopefully inspire students for their own future endeavours. I hope that during the AA2A programme, whilst working through my goals, I can introduce the next level of professionalism to my business and quality to my work, whilst increasing my confidence and belief in my work and myself.
For 2017 - 18:
In the first year, since graduating, of establishing myself as an Artist Silversmith and Jeweller, I have discovered that creating gallery quality, contemporary silver sculptures, functional pieces and jewellery is only the first step in building a successful Designer/Maker business. The presentation, distribution and advertising of a collection, is also an important factor and must reflect the highest level of quality that I strive for, in the making and presentation of my work. Having the dedicated time and workshop space and equipment through the AA2A scheme, would enable me to focus on such issues. Such as modifying and creating bespoke tooling solutions for issues encountered when designing a piece, giving me more freedom and options during the making process. Designing bespoke, wooden presentation boxes, display plinths and accessories, which enhance the quality materials and craftsmanship of my collection and gives added luxury appeal and exclusivity of the design, is another goal. Experimenting with sculptural lighting and illuminated metal installations would allow me to venture into the areas of contemporary interiors which will introduce a broader customer base to my contemporary metalwork, which is a crucial issue when establishing a new business. Interacting with students through workshop practice and presentations, to explain options available to new graduates, especially jewellery and metalsmithing students and to share my journey, would benefit my own confidence and experience as well as hopefully inspire students for their own future endeavours. I hope that during the AA2A programme, whilst working through my goals, I can introduce the next level of professionalism to my business and quality to my work, whilst increasing my confidence and belief in my work and myself.
