I have long been interested in exploring an extension of my film-making practice into print and paper and whilst on the aa2a scheme will be creating a series of kinetic paper constructions out of screen printed patterns. The principle idea is to create moving image without using projected image or representational imagery.
Film-making and moving image is the central material of, and theme to, my work. Forming the Star and Shadow Cinema and being a member of Film Bee have helped me immerse myself in this material and its constructs. From printing images on film I will move to printing on paper and will present a different type of moving image.
Film and its manipulation of an audience have been a constant interest for me, consequently it is interesting for me to look at film on a simple and more transparent level, to see how a more upfront use of the material can effect the viewer. In simple terms, the crux of this project lies in presenting the moving image as a 'live' installation and investigating alternative materials for constructing time based works. It is a stripped down and alternative look at moving image, which might just suggest to the reader something closer to kinetic sculpture – but the forms, presentation and parameters around viewing it will hold it closer to film, or even animation.
