The installation created for my MA has given me not only a glimpse of who I am but, most of all, the confidence to achieve whatever I set my mind to. For me the MA has been all about building on the tools I gained during my BA with the added bonus of supercharging my confidence. Hopefully with what I have gained I will be able to inspire the next Chris Day. The early work I produced during my BA, like Emmet Till and Strange Fruit, was my way of creating a conversation which, at the time, was like walking through a desert looking for water. Since George Floyd and Black Lives Matter it's hard to find dry land and this has pushed me to reignite even more conversations regarding slavery and its brutal past. Some would argue that I am still doing what I did in my BA and I would reply yes, but I now have the confidence to talk about history and interweave my own story.
The artwork I produce now still has copper and rope and anything that I feel complements what I am trying to say about a subject and I feel I have created a trade mark or signature to my work. All the work I have created is a way of engaging with the public and I give my time freely to achieve this. This opportunity will enable me to carry on that conversation at an institute where leaning is at the forefront of challenging society perceptions.
