A Rite of Passage is a ceremony/event marking an important stage of a person’s life, e.g. Birth or Marriage. As Van Gennep described, Rites of passage have three distinct phases:
Separation: The detachment – Cutting away from the former self.
Liminality: A transitional phase where one has left a place/state but has not yet joined the next.
Incorporation: Assuming a ‘new’ identity, often characterised by an elaborate ritual e.g. A wedding.
This exhibition culminates a selection of works which are relative to these three stages, and perhaps question the importance and longevity of the Rite.
Themes concerning permanence/impermanence, fragility and abjection are explored through the use of architectural installation and domestic materials.
