Project summary:

I work variously in video, audio, text, photographic imagery and painting. Across these media a frequent characteristic of my work is the combination of images and words. I am interested in differences in how visual and verbal media address a viewer and in the importance played by representational structures in the creation of self and social identity. My work attempts to tap into what might be called a 'collective cultural imagery' – the associations and mental images that people carry with them already, that they have absorbed from the world around them sometimes unconsciously.

My recent work uses words to suggest figurative visual images. I am intrigued by the ability of words to evoke other senses and by the relationship of language to physical experience.

Other works aim to develop a mode of writing that sits somewhere between stasis (evoking a scene) and narrative development. Here I often use methods of quotation and juxtaposition. I write texts myself and additionally use and adapt text or stylistic tropes from a variety of sources including proverbs and sayings, historical narratives, descriptions of photo/film images, autobiography and stories supplied by others.

For AA2A I want to produce a series of text/image works using digital imaging, drawing and screen-printing. These will be a development from recent works that use words to suggest figurative visual images or physical associations. I want to begin to incorporate more pictorial elements to combine with text, particularly images that explore the built environment and our interaction with it.
