THUD!
THUD! is an audio-responsive sound installation based on the ideas of active participation and co-creation: the sound installation continuously records and overlays accidental sounds of the audience members passing through the gallery space and assembles a sonic landscape from all the accidental sounds like foot shuffles while constantly replaying the emerging soundscape back into the room. A preview on 19 November, 2-5pm, will feature live performances by jazz and electroacoustic musicians Paul Jolly, Rick Jensen and a live stream by a noise artist and DIY experimentalist, Aurora, hailing from Slovakia.

Cunctation 2019 - 2022
Cunctation 2019 - 2022 meaning lateness/delay This exhibition marks a conclusion for a group of artists who began their ACPS fellowship and AA2A residencies in October 2019, prior to the first lockdown. We are grateful that UCLan and the ‘Artists Access to Art Colleges’ (AA2A) have continued to support us through these disrupted times and has allowed us to complete our residencies over three years, rather than the intended one year time scale. The Printmaking and Ceramics departments at UCLan foster a sense of innovation, discovery, adaptation, development and resolution. Working within a culture of research and innovation links between print and ceramics at UCLan continues to push the boundaries across both disciplines.

Making Drawing
This exhibition investigates the relationship between drawing and making through collaboration. Inspired by a conversation between a student and tutor at UCA, the idea for this project is simple. What would happen if artists exchanged drawings and then reinterpreted each other’s drawings in three dimensions, using ceramics or glass? At the heart of this project are two questions: how does drawing inform making, and how can collaboration enrich practice?   The idea has evolved into a project between ten students and tutors on the Ceramics and Glass Masters at UCA who all demonstrate a strong relationship between drawing and making within their practice. This exhibition will show the drawings alongside the objects they inspired through collaboration.

West Midlands Open
The New Art Gallery Walsall is delighted to present, for the first time, the West Midlands Open, an exhibition of recent artworks in various media by artists from, or connected, to the region. The exhibition follows an open-call to West Midlands artists, including those currently attending an art school in the region or educated here in the past 10 years. The Gallery received over 500 entries from across the region, spanning Greater Birmingham, The Black Country, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Warwickshire. From these, a panel of independent judges and Gallery staff selected 250 works for exhibition. The West Midlands Open celebrates the quality, diversity and vibrancy of the local visual arts ecology and provides a platform and selling opportunity for artists in the region.

BA Fine Art Degree Show 2022 The root of the word control is the Latin contrarotulus meaning a register, counter, or record of something. CTRL, an abbreviation of control, is synonymous with a digital key which when combined with other keys, carries out an instruction, a shortcut, an action.  The 2022 graduating BA Fine Art students are a group who are full of ideas and things to say – the issues they are dealing with are both complex and important. Their exhibition CTRL is the result of a series of commands, manifest through creativity, technical skill, and an understanding of the potential functionality of art practice in what it can say and how it comes to be. Many of the student’s individual practices explore issues of identity, memory and loss, culture, heritage, environment, communication, and the foregrounding of marginalised voices. Their outcomes are in many ways connected through a sense of being and belonging – to personal, social,...

Ceramic Cities Exchange – Kasama and Stoke-on-Trent
British Ceramics Biennial is involved in a number of international projects working with organisations and initiatives in supporting artists exchange aiming to deepen cultural and artist-lead dialogues between countries, organisations, artists and potters.  Platformed at BCB 2021, Kasama Potters, Clay College and Staffordshire University embark on a new collaboration and exchange between Stoke-on-Trent and Kasama, Japan. The initiative seeks to meaningfully build upon the Kasama Potters exhibition at BCB 2019 and the existing connection between Stoke-on-Trent and Kasama as places of significant ceramic heritage and contemporary practice. The exchange will take place through exhibition and through an online exchange programme.  This exhibition seeks to highlight the talent located in and emerging from Kasama and Stoke-on-Trent and the relevance that intercultural exchange can have in better understanding the significance of our places as the catalyst for creative innovation and excellence.

Haptic Tacit : Spode works
Haptic/tacit is a collective of artists, makers, and writers that creates opportunities to make, show, and explore ambitious modern craft through a series of thematically-driven exhibitions, events, and publications. For each iteration each participating member invites someone new to be involved, either working collaboratively, in response to one another, or due to their specific take on the subject. This approach creates an evolving network of makers, encourages dialogue, and maintains a fresh outlook, creating a new dynamic through each distinct endeavour. This project echoes the group residency haptic/tacit founding members took part in alongside other makers from the Crafts Council Hothouse scheme for emerging makers as part of the 2013 British Ceramics Biennial programme and is part of the 2021 biennial programme. The Spode Works site has continued to have creative resonance with architecture and space/place a recurring theme and it is through that lens that we approach this project,...

We are commoners
'We are commoners' is an exhibition that invites you to become or recognise yourself as a ‘commoner’. Featuring UK and international artists, the projects exhibited in this exhibition represent ideas and resources to inspire acts of commoning. For the exhibition created “Breaking Borders” Jacky celebrates shared places, systems and ideas that bring people together. Her project gives insight into commoning that takes place through local community food production and skills sharing. ‘Bees and Refugees’, the collective enterprise in London featured in this work, supports people through difficult times whilst improving community cohesion and benefiting biodiversity. Founded by Ali Alzein, the charity protects honeybees as well as helping refugees who may be struggling to adjust to their new lives. Having fled his home in Syria, Ali speaks of the importance of ‘freedom of movement’ and ‘breaking borders’ for refugees. Jacky has purposely avoided giving the sculptural forms a border, displacing the organised structure...

Dates: 07-10-2021 to 31-10-2021
I was recently elected to the LSA and am taking part in their annual members show at the Newarke Houses Musuem in Leicester. The show is FREE to the public and runs from the 7th October until the 31st October. Open Tuesday - Sunday 10am-4pm. The work I have in the show are two solar plate intaglio prints, created using dock leaves that have been eaten away by dock beetles, leaving a lace like pattern. Solar plate prints are a less toxic form of printmaking, as the process uses only sunlight and water. I have framed the prints in solid oak frames, and unframed editions are also available. If you are not able to make the show the works are also online here... http://www.leicestersocietyofartists.co.uk/events/2021/annual-exhibition-artwork-2021-page-4.php http://www.leicestersocietyofartists.co.uk/events/2021/annual-exhibition-artwork-2021-page-4.php

Rite of Passage

Rite of Passage
A Rite of Passage is a ceremony/event marking an important stage of a person’s life, e.g. Birth or Marriage. As Van Gennep described, Rites of passage have three distinct phases: Separation: The detachment – Cutting away from the former self. Liminality: A transitional phase where one has left a place/state but has not yet joined the next. Incorporation: Assuming a ‘new’ identity, often characterised by an elaborate ritual e.g. A wedding. This exhibition culminates a selection of works which are relative to these three stages, and perhaps question the importance and longevity of the Rite. Themes concerning permanence/impermanence, fragility and abjection are explored through the use of architectural installation and domestic materials.

Dates: 28-06-2020 to 28-09-2020
Protest For Protest
Protest for Progress was ZEST Hall’s very first exhibition - In partnership with Leeds City Museum, the exhibition featured work from 33 artists across the globe, as well as showcasing two collections from Leeds City Museum. Launched on the 28th June 2020, the exhibition marks 51 years since the Stonewall riots in New York City - a monumental protest which saw the uprising of the LGBT+ community against their long battle with police brutality. With the protests and the uprising of the #blacklivesmatter movement, we felt that the exhibition could not be more timely, as we continue to fight against police brutality in a system which is oppressive to minority groups. The exhibition aims to represent minority voices, focusing on protests, rebellion and change. With works ranging from photojournalism, paintings, spoken word, installation, film and performance, we hope to use our platform to educate and visualise a better future.
