Two months have passed now since I started AA2A. During this first two months I have mainly been working to familiarise myself with the facilities that the Uni of Derby print room has and to experiment with new ink, various types of papers and techniques that I have never done or haven’t been working on for some time. The resulting prints have been very inconsistent in terms of appearance and I was feeling that I had under-achieved. I was also feeling slightly dis-orientated and unhappy with how I was working. However, I have identified what works and what doesn’t in the environment, have tried wooden type letterpress for the first time and have been able to figure out how Mokulito (a new technique to me) works, which was a small delightful achievement. I have also arrived at a theme which has always been of interest to me, and I think this suits the way I work.


During this period I have learned how to bind hard-back books at Leicester Print Workshop. Following that, I did some research into artists’ books in the university’s library. The library’s resources gave me different ideas of displaying and exhibiting (I was also inspired by Illya Kabakov’s installation works at Tate Modern). I don’t know if it will manifest during my AA2A residency but artist’s books was my focus in the foundation study (my final project was ‘Portable Exhibition’ comprising of numbers of small books and boxes), and installation art (alongside moving image) was part of my research interest during the BA course. I am hoping that these, alongside two dimensional prints, will be something I can confidently pursue in the future.


problems, set-backs & challenges....

Well, things haven't gone as I had hoped with the drone project. Staff in the computing dept were unable to help with this, and somehow in the process of research, one of the components has been broken. I will have to locate a replacement part before being able to continue. And of course I still have to find a way to get these brushless drone motors to work...

Photogravure Adventures

Memory, time and the image are what drive my practice, (the dynamic visual status of remembrance and daydream). In print, this means introducing interruption in the way an image is received, through the process of reprinting, and then again in how it is presented in exhibition. Exaggerating the aesthetics of photo etchings, pushing bleed and blur, or ‘error’, as Boym says, ‘errors’, “capture a manual labour of memory and a “personal” touch that imprints in the images like a disruptive signature”.


Because of this it could either be easier, or harder to compare digital and analogue photo transfer to printing plates. Similarly comparing toyobo photo etching plates, and photo polymer laminated plates, may also be harder or easier to see the effects of. But this is where my starting point is.


The visual effects of digitisation such as dpi and pixilation, are often carried across to plate when using digital photography or an acetate aqua tint screen and image (that is digitally printed) to transfer an image & aqua tint to the plate.

There is here, in my opinion, sometimes a loss of the physicality, and the gestural because of this. I wish to use analogue technologies to reconnect with more traditional etching aesthetics in photogravure, to show human ‘error’, and to re explore mark making; intervening in the process of image transfer and exposing plates.


Another ‘spanner in the works’ however is that the photo’s I use often already contain blur, or are close ups, sometimes microscope close ups.


I have started at Derby by using glass plate negatives to transfer an image to toyobo plate so that no digital effects are introduced. But have had to use an aqua tint screen still.


I then went back to ‘Image On Blue Film’ a photopolymer film, which i feel is closer to traditional etching. A seemingly common feature of photo etching with toyobo plate is an almost clinical precision, which looses touch with the material aesthetic of an etching sometimes. But this could also be flipped to show blur in more detail!


I am now in the process of using both toyobo and photo polymer laminated plates to print with to compare. Again, because I intend to use a photo of the prints to expose a fresh plate to, I will exaggerate the effects of the printing in both mediums to compare this also.

The value of a new medium

For my residency I wanted to learn screen printing. As a photography and public art graduate it is not a million miles away from the mediums I already use but I am finding the process of learning a new medium is focusing my mind on my practice as I consider how to apply it to how I usually work. Invaluable for development and reengaging with practice!

Potential progress with the question of powering the drone motors

I had a useful meeting on Nov 29th with Dr Shabnam Sadeghi-Esfahlani and two of her post-grad students in the Computing and Technology Department who have undertaken to help me to get the drone motors working for the flying lampadario project , and I'm hopeful they will be successful!


Film work

I am currently back in Coventry working on a short film with images sourced from a set of 35mm slides from the late 1960's and inspired in part by a relatively unknown female travel journalist from the same period. I have spent my first few sessions reassessing and re-visualising archive imagery, cropping and repositioning the focus to create new digital photographs within a studio environment. I am in many ways seeking aspects within the images that the original photographer may have overlooked.

AA2A and Who am i?

After graduating two years ago I went to work at Unseen Photo Fair in Amsterdam, I found their to be a refreshing attitude a lack of heirachy in the arts that really appealed to me. 

I moved back to rural North Yorkshire for work in April 2016. I missed having access to the arts, to creative networks to the industry, and to my peers. To a creative network. I found out about AA2A from an artist who had taken part previously. It sounded briliant. Jut the peer networking, diverse source of inspiration and work I needed. I am really happy to be accepted by Derby and look forward to what the next months have in store. An opportunity to develop new work, a place where wealth doesn't matter, a breaking down of the barriers and an increase in access in the Arts. 

Now who am i? What is it that I do? 
I’m Jo (http://www.joannecoates.co.uk/) a visual storyteller based in the North of England. My work is a documentary approach to every day stories that are often overlooked. I graduated from London College of Communication in 2015 and have been working freelance for a year and a half.
My mottos both photographic and personal, is never under estimate anyone, and always listen, everyone has a story worth hearing. 

I studied Fine art at The Cass then Photography at London college of Communication. Honestly, you get out of it what you put into it. I always felt lucky to have the opportunity to be studying in London and used my time. The aspects I found most vital were theory and the visiting lecturers. 

I've been working freelance for a year and a half since graduating all over the world and across the UK. I'm just started on my path and am interested in the ways AA2A wil influence me. 


Lens Think Yorkshire

L E N S    T H I N K 



Lens think is; A creative group, a community of people that can offer advice, a place where people can chat about ideas and work, it helps ease that pressure. It’s also really important to have peers out there, on the more business side to network and to grow an understanding of the industry you work in.

There are so many rejections in this industry we are told we need to be tough, and develop a thick skin. The problem lies in that most creative are sensitive people, the pressures can take their toll. A physical meeting won’t solve any of the problems within the photographic industry BUT what it can do is be a great place, to encourage inclusivity, to allow people to be curious, to meet people that they can form collaborative projects with.  Also to put on some events that allows people to experiment a little with the medium, with other people and with themselves.  I wanted to create a group where it didn’t matter how established people were, where it doesn’t matter what awards they’ve won, what university you attended, what class you’re from, it’s a meet up where everyone is welcome.

Our launch event was May 11th 2017 in York. The night saw Al Palmer of Publishers Brown Owl Press alongside Speed Creative networking. Amongst the photographers were Graphic Designers, Publishers and magazine editors. Lens think has a Facebook group which is open to anyone to join, a instagram that features interviews with new and more well known work by photographers who have worked in the North.

Thursday November 30th  will see the very last social of 2017  for Lens Think Yorkshire, A bi-monthly social in Yorkshire to meet, share work, ideas, & develop photography in the North. The night will see a trio of talented speakers, talking about how they make it work in Photography. Photographers from across Sheffield will take to the intimate venue of Hagglers Corner for an informal night to celebrate Lens Think’s first year. 

|| Al Brydon || 

 || Al is a UK based photographer and co-founder of the Inside the Outside collective.He currently resides in South Yorkshire, on the edge of the Peak District. This relatively recent move back to his home triggered connections with the landscape in ways he never realised were possible. The landscape and the long departed people who lived and worked within it sing songs. He's trying to learn to listen. ||

|| Darren is a Sheffield based Documentary photographer and photojournalist currently working for Guzelian Photo agency. His work regularly appears in the national press including the guardian, the times and the daily Telegraph.  Darren has exhibited across the UK and his project "Anywhere But Home" was published as a book by Brown Owl Press.  ||

|| Chelsea is a recent graduate of  Sheffield Hallam university where she won the Best in Show award for her work.  ||

Back in the UK now and beginning to work in earnest on the first of the sky pieces. Plenty of issues: At the moment the technical challenge is to try to find a way to get three drone motors to work, controlled by an arduino. I also have some "flying" video footage I'd like to use as part of this work, but still have no real idea how to integrate it with the sculptural element. I like these problems, or at least I like trying to deal with the challenges they pose.
