A side trip and the first proper print

Walls 2 - first two colours

The first task of this session was to do the first two colours of a print in a different series from the one I'd been working on so far. The main thing is a calligraphic kind of image abstracted from a photo of dry-stone walls where I live, this is the background for it. There's a light yellow-green layer behind the stripy mid green. The first layer was a bit patchy - I was printing at A3 rather than A4, which all the previous stuff has been - and Natalie Shaw, the print technician here, thought to ask me if I was flooding the screen with paint before printing, and of course I wasn't. The image quality improved after that, thanks Natalie. The stripes on the second colour are done with wax resist on the screen, taking a rubbing from a load of string I had glued to a board.

Next thing was to put the second colour on the sketch prints for the 'flipped' composition; the paint, which I had mixed the time before, was a bit manky and I was doing everything in a hurry so paint was bleeding under the edge of the stencil, but they are only sketches after all.

To finish the session, I chose the final arrangement of shapes for the 'closer' composition, measured it up and scaled it up to A3 ...

Working methods

Then very very quickly, with the blue paint since it was lying about and I didn't want to keep it, I did a test print. More on this next time with the proper colour.

Developing the second and third compositions

I was still thinking about the colours for the 'distant' composition that I was working on last time, so I moved on to develop the second and third compositions I derived from the first experimental session.

This is the 'flipped' one - it has the larger shape at the top rather than the bottom. I tried both diameters of circle in each place. The colours will stay with the naive landscape theme that's creeping in - the upper shape will be sky blue! I got the paint mixed this session but ran out of time to print it.

Variants on the 'closer' composition

I did get both colours printed on a set of variants of the 'closer' composition. The plan was to do both shapes in the same colour to see what difference it made to the way things were working, following the example of the Bridget Riley painting in the previous blog post. I thought it would save time too, but in the end I had to wash the screen because I forgot to put in any acrylic medium in when I mixed the paint so it started to dry in the screen - you can see some patchy printing on the bottom shape. Fantastic intense colour though ...

Up and running

I am finding the aa2a at Falmouth a very good place for research and also the amount of departments and equipment etc to create all kinds of things is great but quite over welling. The staff and student here are very good and I have been inducted in must of the areas I want to work, so I feel I can now make a real start. Falmouth itself is a nice town and is on the south coast of Cornwall, there are lots of great things to do in Cornwall in all weathers with the added bonus of a rich history within my field of engineering and art. The college want the four aa2a’s to have an exhibition of previous work in college to highlight are presents, which is great.

I had a walk round Doncaster Market on Sunday, in the grey damp, because I wanted to get the project started.  Two pictures resulted.  This was a surprise as it was very quiet and almost deserted, lacking its usual energy and noise.  I felt a great inertia and almost gave in and left the camera in its bag.  I think I'll make my next trip on a market day!

All a bit of a shock this AA2A web site, contract, fellow artists and great support from Doncaster College.  Not sure I want to write a blog but I seem to have started.

I bought a book on Edward Weston's work yesterday.  As he always does he upsets my view of photography.  I was all set to get the Nikon's out and start work on the project and then you look at the content and quality of his images and you have to stop to have a think and recover.  I was in the middle of this process when I discovered that I can write a blog and now I've got the book out again!

Book is: 'Edward Weston  The form of the nude' by Amy Conger and available from Galloway and Porters in Cambridge for £19.95 or, I hope, any good library

Making progress, taking shape

Hi - had a good day today, starting to grasp my direction after being distracted by so many possibilities. Today did my first lazer cutting and a shower of rain gave me one of those eureka moments as the drops landed on my light reflecting plastic!!! Also loving the textile print although hadn't anticipated how patient I would have to be particularly as I envisage a loooong print.

The best bit was feeling how I am stretching and broadening my skills and practice but today also saw the coherence  working across what I am now planning.

Hope to be more organised and upload some photos with my next Blog - so been through the frustration and distraction now feeling focused and enjoying

Where the idea is from

The composition idea for series of prints I'm working on is pretty simple ... just two differently-sized circles of colour wandering over to each other on a white background. You can find a lot of precedent for that sort of thing:

I think a lot of the impetus for these sorts of pictures comes from Swiss graphic designer Josef Müller-Brockmann, who was doing some superb work with circles in the 1950s. I think Riley would have been aware of him as she was working in an ad agency around then. Here's a 1958 poster by Müller-Brockmann:

First weeks at UCLAN

Having been a member of Artlab, a wednesday night print group based at the Universtity, since February I've already found my feet. Its a great space and the technical staff (both excellent printmakers) are very friendly and helpful. I know a few of the MA students and the coffee is good , so there is plenty of oppurtunity for socialising and talking about work/not work. I'm getting to know some of the first year BA students as well and Its interesting watching them take their first steps in printing.

I've been getting stuck in and have started a piece based on blueprints., and am experimenting with colour and halftone on a series of prints which use shaving foam sculptures as a starting point.

Next week I'm hoping to create a large screenprint of these sculptures.
