Tessa Newcombe

Year:
2006-07
Project summary:

Finally breaking free of her Mother's benign shadow, Tessa Newcomb has emerged in the last decade as a major artist in her own right. Her Suffolk is a place of odd encounters, an unkempt land and seascape of working figures, dogs, boats, allotments, wild churchyards and wildest flowers. These days she also works on travels with partner Telfer Stokes (artist son of Margaret Mellis). All her engaging art is characterised by a compulsion to paint.

"Since leaving Art School I have always painted and exhibited and have become known for a particular style. I hope to use this opportunity at Suffolk College to work in a public space and to use Ipswich, with its wonderful urban environment. I shall draw on my experience at Art School, my years of looking at paintings and the fact that I am not working for my next exhibition here, to allow my paintings to change and develop."
