Project summary:

For the AA2A residency I want to develop a new body of work examining the “regeneration” of our urban landscape. More property is being built in this country than at any time since the Second World War yet it’s almost entirely owned by private corporations. This new and untested urban planning has far reaching social consequences and it is some of these issues that I want to explore in my new work. This is a development of part of my MA completed in 2008, and based on research undertaken this year. I intend photographing a number of sites, in Bradford and elsewhere, to provide images that I will later digitise and screen print. I will also be looking at other source material such as maps, diagrams and text to incorporate into the work. I will be using “four colour separation” in order to screen print my images in full colour (previously I had only used monochrome) and making more use of digital applications prior to printing. This is a departure from my previous working practice and will, I believe, give me more flexibility and efficiency in my working methods while giving my work greater depth and quality. I see the AA2A residency as an opportunity to more fully integrate photography with screen print and further develop my skills as a printmaker. It offers me access to facilities I couldn’t otherwise obtain and, with the library, the possibility of a higher level of research than I can undertake at present. I hope that the work I undertake on the residency will be of interest to students and my experience of photography and screen print useful in their own development. I feel that by being approachable and prepared to help others it will go some way in repaying all the support and encouragement I myself have received over the years.
