Adapt! Large diameter Schott Profile tubing is manipulated using flame and breath on the glass-lathe, a forgotten industrial facility reinstated at the National Glass Centre especially for this project. Gas filled glass was secured using nuts and bolts cast in resin through a technique known as rapid prototyping. My inspiration came from 20th century, electricity generating, bold, honest forms. Electric insulator ribs and trumpets search outwards to connect, like flowers desperate for pollination. The narrative suggests purpose beyond that of a chandelier.
Adapt! amalgamates old glass making methods with recent technologies to create an extravagant yet functional, 100% recyclable and energy efficient light sculpture.
