Project summary:

I am interested in layers, and the way in which the layers themselves operate in different contexts. There is metaphorical depth which is the semiotic understanding of pictures, i.e. constructed narrative, storytelling, connotation, ideology. Then there's the physical depth to the work: interruptions on the photo's surface, the framing, where the work is presented. And finally the act of photographing itself: creating illusion; projection; perspective; limitations; and deceptions of the camera's lens.

I present images with contradictory reading - at times deceptive, theatrical, and beautiful. These themes lend themselves to manipulation, which I prefer to control in front of the camera lens rather than in the post production of retouching. This offers a multi-layered sandwich of ideas, offering viewers different parts to bite into. My work is research based, this can begin with building up a collection of objects, postcards, drawings, or dialogue. For the current project I am interviewing people about their heroines. These conversations have unravelled a number of preoccupations we have with role models - idolisation, iconoclasts, and sub-cultures, to name but a few.
