Project summary:

Paint on paper and fabric, embroidery on Bernina sewing machines, needle-punch machine to give textures and blend fabrics, use 3D workshop to make stretchers. I will be based mainly in the fibre studio making components with the above machines and assembling work on a surface if available and use batik and screen printing too Projecting sketchbook images onto fabric ‘canvases’ of woollen and other fabrics, developing elements made from paper and fabrics and felt.

Developing work by use of acrylic paint on variety of paper and fabric elements. I will be able to use sewing and needle-punch machines in the fibre studio to embroider and felt fabric components and to design work and decide on the direction the work is going, comparing one technique to another. The work will develop by using benches for cutting-out, and sewing a variety of types of stitches on Bernina and constructing on machines by sewing and felting on needle-punch machine. My work may become sculptural due to being able to sew through a variety of thick layers of fabric that I cannot do on a normal sewing machine at home. Using screen printing and batik, together with a variety of coloured sewing threads and varying and dense machine stitching and embroidery, the work will become colourful and beautiful.

I want to make work for exhibition at the Chapman Gallery or another space at the university. I want to make a body of work which will enable me to exhibit work to achieve funding, from Arts Council grants, to buy sewing and needle-punch machines and to put on a solo exhibition in Wythenshawe – which has little provision for local artists. I feel this would be a positive outcome for me and artist friends in the town.
