Project summary:

Central to my practice is a curiosity with social psychology. I am fascinated by human behaviour, in particular how we affect and are affected by others through attitudes, social norms and social influence. I have been concerned for many years with the idea of 'community' and how a sense of locality can have positive and negative implications. I have involved myself in many varied communities in order to understand peoples desires and values, goals and ambitions and ultimately what makes people happy.
In my drawings, I have attempted to create a sense of akwardness through power struggles and conformity intertwined with the desire for connectedness and the need to belong. I am very passionate about drawing as a medium as its spontenuity and intimacy have allowed me to explore many ideas with a simple line. I love the power that a line can have on a piece of paper and the ambiguity it can create with such simplicity.
The Access to Art Colleges scheme would give me the opportunity to develop a collection of prints that relate to one and other and would be presented together. It would also give me the chance to explore drawing that takes on a sculptural element in which 'drawn' lines are made from a combination of printed images, masking tape, wire and thread continuing the lines beyond the paper and into the surrounding space.
The aim of the placement would be to finish a piece of work to a professional standard which could then be exhibited in the future. I would love the opportunity to work in a creative and stimulating environment and hope to have an positive and encouraging impact on the students. I believe this would open up exciting possibilities to meet new artists to exhibit and collaborate with in the future.
