Project summary:

My work focuses on the poetics of space, the way in which people collect and place objects in their domestic sphere. The context of my work usually reflects a curious interest in culture and cross-cultural influence upon the selection and placement of objects, their meaning, material, culture and memory. The increasing transient nature of many people’s lives has meant that old and news ways of seeing have developed and transpired. The impact of migration, changes in the economy, influences of faith, the way we dress, eat and language, have changed the shape of our lives.

The importance of the home and garden with all its nooks and crannies often hold personal secrets and desires revealing strange or quirky modes of gathering and placement. These could be found in a draw, a corner of a room, in an attic or a purse.

My AA2A scheme of work would start by visiting homes in the area, to take a range of photographs inside and out and collect stories and surprises along the way. Making use of the photographic/film resources at Sir John Cass will help to make this possible. I have already made contact with some residents. This work will be an extension of my caravan installation 2008 titled, ‘Untold’, (exhibited at the MoDA Museum).

My next aim will be to select a few concepts from the objects, text and photography material gathered and plan to create sculptural forms or installation from this process. Having access to the Sir John Cass 3D workshop would be brilliant.

I’d aim for the photographic material to be made into a book to be published and would like the sculpture to be developed into public art for Tower Hamlets.
