Project summary:

This opportunity to have access to Bath College comes at a perfect time for me. Over the last 18 months I have been able to re-engage with my work as an artist after being relatively unproductive for a while, mostly due to family and economic factors. The last 15 years have been spent organising and facilitating many community art and public art projects often in collaboration with other artists. In addition I have been working as a self-employed graphic designer. My ambition and desire was always to be an artist/maker, and recently I have been able to commit - on average – 1 to 2 days each week to working in my own studio.

I have been working on mixed media paintings that have been edging towards relief works. The themes explore current social issues and my experience of living in a rapidly changing world. Their starting point is often through found objects or newspaper clippings - see images “Cost of Living”. This current work would be my starting point, and I would like to continue and expand both the media and subject matter possibly into sculpture or digital media and video.

I enjoy working alone, but at the same time I need, and would benefit from the stimulation of being around other creative people and in an arts environment. Having access to equipment and studio facilities and technical support would enable me to be more creative, ambitious and experimental. My ultimate aim is to have a solo or collaborative exhibition in 2009/10.

I like to think that my experience of working with communities on art projects, and my background in design would be of interest to students, and also my willingness to talk honestly and candidly about my own creative career and knowledge of the arts.
