Project summary:

A young child when given a new toy will often end up playing with the packaging. For the rest of us the plastic sleeve of an Easter egg, the chocolate box tray, the supermarket carton for sausages are all functional, anonymous and fated to have no purpose beyond safe delivery of the goods to the consumer. Using different clays, glazes, surface decoration and ceramic styles I explore a wide range of transformations and interpretations of these invisible throw away items. Based on responses to some prototypes the resulting ceramics have intrinsic value, are seriously and critically appraised, desired, consciously purchased and proudly displayed! Based in the North York Moors National Park I am a member of the Ryedale Artists Group. I also work with earthenware clays using traditional slip techniques to paint a range of wall sculptures and throw pots that are decorated based on Chinese folk paper cuts.
