Previous AA2A Artist

Harriet Todd

Year:
2006-07
Project summary:

I currently design and produce jewellery from found objects, which I use for cuff/inks, earrings, rings and necklaces. These are often personalised with the client's initials or words or numbers that are personal to them.

I also create fabric necklaces. At the moment I am using off-cuts of interesting manufactured fabrics but I wish to produce my own illustrated and printed designs. This work is a development of the work produced during my degree course, which focused on the use of print to enhance fashion accessories with illustrated themes. These accessories were designed both for wear and for display as art in their own right. I have recently started working in metal (aluminium) and have just successfully completed a commission for a charm bracelet, which has led to a further commission from the same client for two more pieces, a necklace and a bracelet. Also through this commission I am in discussion with a hair salon in Ipswich who would like me to work alongside them to produce new designs for fashion events to promote the salon. The designs will include ear, neck and arm jewellery as well as face jewellery. I currently produce jewellery for the Reunion Gallery in Felixstowe and the firstsite Gallery in Colchester. I have also sold work at Art on the Prom (Felixstowe) and other art and craft fairs in Suffolk and Essex over the past three years.

If successful in my application for AA2A scheme I would use access to the facilities at Suffolk College to experiment with new designs and techniques for print onto fabric and to research and develop reproducible production methods for fashion accessories and art works. I believe that this opportunity would significantly assist in development of my career as a textile artist.

I see strong possibilities for printed fabric as a cross over medium between art and fashion and would use this project as a means of developing and demonstrating this through the production of a number of complementary pieces.
