Previous AA2A Artist

David Gilroy
In starting the AA2A residency I had a project in mined, that of comparing Plymouth and Wolverhampton. Exploring their similarities and differences. Starting the residency in January and spending a week on my first visit I found that I was drawn to the canals as the starting point for the study. These have became the focal point and have taken over the idea of a comparative study of the cities. Looking along the sides of the tow paths the wildlife and the urban backdrop merge together and give images that give images that remove a particular time and place. Hopefully this body of work has this quality and gives images that speak of the condition of the canal rather than of trends. The AA2A scheme has allowed me to do work in another city that I would not have worked in otherwise and develop a body of work that I will be returning to regularly to update document the changes of the canal sides.
