Project summary:

Tachism, catalyst and motif are from landscape. I make a different and considered response to each individual subject. The work is often quite large, and the frame deep. Relating to an interest in the limen, threshold or boundary. High relief, the frame is often fabricated from old hardwood banisters; the support, often stone, or an old wooden panel.

The ‘sculpture paintings’ are informed by current research running parallel to studio practice. Taking the zeitgeist of the times as environmental concerns. And the main points of departure as; deforestation, reforestation, contemporary atmosphere, the importance of recycling and our carbon footprint. Within the recessed panels I point up our heritage of veteran and working trees, ancient woodland and new forest as iconic figures, to be revered or held up for veneration.

Pushed through further artistic processes and devices I employ both conventional and unorthodox techniques and media which relate to the image/frame relationships I feel are important to the balance. Where all parts are of equal value, interest and importance of each individual ‘sculpture painting’. Both the frame and the ‘central imagery’ are meant to be seen as partners towards an overall sensation.
