I describe myself as a mixed media artist but I'm happiest working with paper in some way, whether in 2D or 3D. My Project title is journey which gives me scope for plenty of exploration of ideas and process, with several strands of thought interweaving.

My art is based on photomicrography. When polarised light is shone through a thin section of rock, only 0.03mm thick, it is refracted by the internal crystallographic structure of the minerals to produce an astonishing array of vivid colours that vary according to both the chemical composition and orientation of the individual interlocking crystals.

John Ruskin, an advocate of “artistic science”, wrote lyrically about the beauties that could be seen using this technique. Using traditional photographic colour film to record my observations, the essential character of the rock has been retained wherever possible but, using some of the tools of modern digital imaging technology, I have taken this idea to a higher level.

Glowing Edges Designs were originally intended to produce a big splash of colour on the walls of modern bars, cafes, clubs, restaurants and other places of business and leisure.

On leaving teaching 10 years ago I stepped back from a long standing theme of traditional landscape. My work has become more involved in creating another view of the world which is outside of time, hovering in the realms of dream and memory. Through this I have evolved a range of techniques that play with the persistent and transient elements of our surroundings - frequently involving stencilling. This has led to a curiousity about the potential for other forms of printmaking, used for their ‘one-off’ qualities rather than a repeating process, as part of the mix. I want to explore the overlap between painting and printing techniques. By printing onto paintings and painting onto prints I hope to exploit the qualities of each and create works that are as ambiguous in process as they are in form. The nature of the outcomes is impossible to predict since there will be a continual dialogue between my studio work and that done in the college as each affects the other.

My career as an artist has emerged from many years experience as a visual arts educator. My work exploring place-based experiences and cultural identity has three interconnected strands of studio work, visual arts education and research.

From initial graduate study of illustration and ceramics I have gravitated towards photography and now create digital and mixed-media pieces from photographs and scanned objects/textures. I am fascinated by motion blur, multiple exposure and ways to capture and/or simultaneously represent time and experiences. As such, my images are heavily layered and often created as sets. I have spent the past year exploring a range of ideas and techniques and am now keen to refine an emergent concept into a coherent body of work for exhibition and publication. Pushing Boundaries is a mixed-media approach that will be largely informed by indigenous art (African, Native American, Australian) which expresses deep cultural links to place. The legacy will be the development of an interdisciplinary residency programme centred on developing environmental awareness through the visual arts. This aims to encourage a change in perceptions of the value of art education through working with subject areas not usually associated with learning through visual expression. The ultimate goal is a wider recognition and acceptance of the relevance of interdisciplinary experiences and systems thinking in how we learn.

The AA2A scheme offers an invaluable opportunity to take this forward within a vibrant, contemporary, creative arts environment. Access to specialist facilities, lecture programme and library will allow greater practical and intellectual exploration of the theme. It will also be rewarding to work alongside creative people. For me - a walking advertisement for lifelong learning - interaction with other artists, educators and students is fundamental to remaining creative and forward thinking.

My work seeks to record the world as I see it; providing, I hope, a visually stimulating record. The challenge is to produce images that stand alone and have the qualities of exhibition works.

Really everything comes from my love of documenting and capturing ‘the image’; stealing the moment and making an object of interest and intrinsic value from it.

South Yorkshire is my home and it is the area in which most of my photographic energy is directed. To me it is an area of fantastic contrast ever changing as national and global events impact on its landscape and people. History, regeneration, renewal, urban and rural environments are all there to be explored.

I don’t see myself as a professional or amateur. I’m a photographer. I was a photographer before I did my first days paid work so ‘photographer’ pre-dates any label of employment status. As a photographer I try to act professionally and try to work to the highest standards possible. I hope that sometimes I succeed.

I work mostly in black and white but if the subject demands it I use colour. I’ve been using digital cameras and printing since 1999 and much as I think of a return to film and wet processing I accept that we have moved on. The history of photography is one of ongoing technical change. It is great to be around when such an important change has occurred.
