I will be producing a new series of print work based on initial research facilitated by the Society of Antiquaries of London. The focus of my research has been their bookplate collection. These small printed labels, pasted into books by their owners, often depict heraldic crests and images of arcadia. I am borrowing from these designs, fracturing them and combining modernist shapes and colour schemes. My interested is in the awkward combination of opposing utopian imagery: modernity and arcadian fantasy.
Having access to print facilities at Sir John Cass Faculty of Art, Media and Design is an excellent opportunity to create a body of work. Quality time with materials is an essential part of my process. Crucially, the scheme gives a context to the production process where artists can engage with the university, the students and other practitioners across the country. Art does not happen in a vacuum and the critical and supportive conversation around the creative process is full of potential. I am keen to build a dialogue between the college and institutions which have facilitated my research.
