About me:
Britishness is the central theme surrounding my practice. I enjoy questioning and challenging perception what it means to be British. Personally, a quaint English tea room, located in a beautiful Shire is as quintessentially British as my 20 year old brother dressed in a Hoodie, whom many would associate with the ‘Hoodie generation’. I find it exciting when images of the two are fused together in a painting.
I appropriate paintings that are steeped in English history and culture, such as 18th century portrait Artist Thomas Gainsborough’s’ ‘Mr and Mrs Andrews. I like to give them a modern day ‘urban’ twist.
Examining the arguments relating to the ‘Black Arts Movement’ of the 1980’s especially through the writings of Eddie Chambers, has broadened my knowledge and understanding as to how my historical and cultural position as a black British, female artist from a working class background in Western society affects the way in which my work is perceived by others.
I wish for my work, not only to be aesthetically pleasing to my audience, but to leave them with something to think about.
